Transmission Poles: Treated Wooden Poles available from R&B Timber Group

What are transmission poles?

Transmission poles, sometimes also called utility poles, are designed to support overhead public utilities such as for telecommunications or powerlines.

In South Africa, transmission poles range from a height of 8m to 13m tall, and generally have a top diameter ranging from 100 to 239mm depending on their use case. They may be easily recognised by the fact that necessary equipment for their use may be mounted at the top of the pole.

What are transmission poles used for?

Transmission poles may alternatively be called power poles, hydro poles, telegraph poles, or telegraph poles, depending on their use.

Transmission poles might support infrastructure such as fibre optic cables, overhead powerlines, electrical cables, and may sometimes ve used to support transformers or even street lights.

Why are wooden transmission poles useful?

Transmission poles can be constructed out of wood, concrete, steel, and fibre-reinforced composite.

However, traditional wooden poles provide optimum flexibility during their installation and offer a wider range of option when considering the placement of necessary hardware and cabling.

The benefit of using treated wooden poles ensures that installers are able to easily drill holes to fit their exact needs, and can use apparatus and utilities such as fasteners to support necessary equipment.
