Creosote Poles, or CCA treated poles are used widely throughout South Africa. Coal-tar creosote is the most widely used wood treatment today; both industrially, processed into wood using pressure methods such as "full-cell process" or "empty-cell process". In addition to toxicity to fungi, insects, and marine borers, it serves as a natural water repellant. Its most common uses are

  • Fencing - Fencing wooden poles can be used in homes, feedlots, game farms and orchards amongst many others.

  • Vineyard Posts - South Africa is one of the world's largest and best wine producers. Each vineyard producing wine will have approximately 100 to 200 vineyard posts supporting the vines. The vines are required to be suspended to keep them disease free.

  • Utility Poles

    • Power Transmission Poles . The power utilty Eskom uses creosote poles to delviver power to rural and some urban areas, helping South Africa grow. The poles are treated with creosote to help them survive the rugged African climate.

    • Telecommuncations Poles. The telecommuncation utility Telkom uses creosote poles to deliver telecoms to rural and some urban areas, helping South Africa stay in touch.

  • Thatching - Used mainly in rural areas, thatching poles continue to be popular in South Africa. Along with builfing poles, these two types of wooden poles have built many a game farm, safari lodge and lapas.

  • Building - Used as above.
